5 Best Oral Surgeons in Melbourne Worth Knowing Before Surgery

Surgical Qualifications: I looked for specialists with both medical and dental degrees. This extra training helps them safely handle complex jaw, face, and reconstructive surgery.

Facility Standards: I checked if each clinic uses modern equipment, advanced imaging, and updated technology. Better tools can help doctors plan treatment more accurately and support a smoother recovery.

Patient Care Pathways: I examined how each clinic supports patients from the first phone call through follow-up visits after surgery. Good communication helps people feel calmer and know what to expect at every step.

Anesthesia Options: I checked whether each clinic offers different anesthesia options, including local and general anesthesia, at a private hospital. Having more choices helps patients stay comfortable during different procedures.

Hearing that you need oral surgery can feel overwhelming, but finding the right specialist can make the process much easier.

Although dental clinics and your orthodontist can help with many dental needs, some procedures are best handled by an experienced oral surgeon.

I put together this guide to help you find trusted specialists in Melbourne who provide skilled care and clear guidance every step of the way.

Your search for the right oral surgeon starts here!

Address: 416 Queens Parade

Contact: 03 9036 9053

Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM

Dr Sophia Richardson makes complex oral surgery feel less overwhelming thanks to her strong background in both medicine and dentistry.

She earned both degrees from the University of Melbourne and co-founded Queens Parade Specialists, where she has provided advanced care since opening the practice in 2020.

Plus, she has advanced training in orthognathic, or corrective jaw, surgery for patients with more complex needs.

Also, patients can choose to have their wisdom teeth removed under local anesthesia at the clinic or general anesthesia in the hospital, giving them added flexibility.

However, she refers to non-surgical TMJ cases and complex hospital-based trauma to other specialists, so she isn’t the best fit for every condition.

The clinic is also closed on weekends, which may not suit patients who need weekend appointments.

Pros

  • Dual medical and dental degrees
  • Corrective jaw surgery expertise
  • Local or general anaesthesia options
  • Private specialist clinic

Cons

  • Refers non-surgical TMJ and complex trauma cases
  • Closed on weekends

Made me feel at ease and safe

Dr Sophia was an amazing surgeon from my first consultation to my final follow up. My jaw correction involved two surgeries with braces in between. As a nurse myself, I can say that Dr. Sophia’s care to detail, bedside manner and compassion is incomparable. Sophia made me feel at ease and safe in her hands through out the process. I Cannot recommend her highly enough!

Left me feeling stress-free and cared for

I could not recommend Dr Sophia Richardson highly enough! I was delighted with the results of my wisdom teeth surgery, minimal swelling and pain following the operation.

She is a fantastic surgeon but an even better person, her caring and friendly nature in all interactions, especially directly before my surgery, left me feeling stress-free and cared for. Quite honestly the best care I have ever received from any healthcare professional.

Dr Kai Lee works from a modern clinic inside Sunshine Private Hospital and treats everything from simple tooth extractions to complex cyst cases.

I noticed that his care is based on the latest surgical techniques and backed by specialist training in Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Also, patients often describe the process from the first consultation as smooth, efficient, and well-organised. Another thing patients appreciate is the short wait time, which makes it easier to get treatment sooner.

That said, some patients have found it difficult to reschedule appointments, as communication from the reception team could be more understanding.

On top of that, the clinic is only open on weekdays, so weekend appointments aren’t available.

Pros

  • Short waiting times
  • International specialist training
  • Private hospital location
  • Wide range of surgical treatments

Cons

  • Appointment rescheduling can be difficult
  • Weekday-only clinic hours

Amazing surgeon! Dr Ricky Kumar is compassionate, professional and super friendly. He extracted 4 of my wisdom teeth under general anaesthetic and followed up with a care call. His staff are very lovely also. If you’re looking for a great surgeon, look no further.

Feeling nervous before oral surgery is completely normal, and South Melbourne Maxillofacial Surgery does a great job helping patients feel more at ease.

Lead specialist Dr Lisa Crighton completed advanced fellowship training in both Canada and Scotland, bringing valuable international experience to every procedure.

Another thing patients appreciate is the caring nursing team, who follow up with a phone call after surgery to check that recovery is going well.

On top of that, the clinic is equally thorough in explaining what to expect after treatment and provides medical certificates if you need time off work.

However, major corrective surgery with general anesthesia usually means staying in the hospital for up to three days, so it’s important to plan ahead. Weekend appointments aren’t available either, since the clinic only operates on weekdays.

Pros

  • International fellowship-trained specialist
  • Supportive post-operative nurse follow-up
  • Care for anxious patients
  • Clear recovery guidance and documentation

Cons

  • Multi-day hospital stay for major surgery
  • Weekday-only clinic hours

A truly professional surgeon

I have seen Dr Crighton a few times for complicated tooth removals & one implant. My daughter saw her to have 4 wisdom teeth removed. Dr Crighton is great with injections, patient, and I always felt really cared for. Dr Crighton explains every step of the procedure and takes away the anxiety that most people experience with complicated dental procedures. The reception staff are also great, always friendly and helpful. Highly recommend Dr Crighton for anyone who looks for a truly professional surgeon who provides excellent care.

Extremely thorough and understanding

I had the best experience with Dr. Crighton as my surgeon. She was not only amazing but also extremely thorough and understanding. I had two complex impacted wisdom teeth, one really close to a nerve and infected. Dr. Crighton ensured that everything went smoothly from the initial consultation to the surgery and post-operative care. Her expertise and attention to detail were remarkable, and she made sure that my recovery was as comfortable as possible. I am truly grateful for Dr. Crighton’s exceptional care and would highly recommend her.

Website: https://miomfs.com.au/

Address: 361 Whitehorse Road

Contact: 03 9131 4484

Hours: Monday – Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

Melbourne Implant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery makes it easier to understand the full cost of treatment by providing a detailed quote during your first visit. This helps patients avoid unexpected costs later on.

From what I’ve seen, they don’t just treat impacted teeth. They also manage complex facial deformities and oral tumours, giving patients access to a wide range of surgical care.

To save time, they even accept X-rays taken at other clinics, allowing the surgeon to review your scans during your consultation.

However, some patients have felt their face-to-face appointment was a little rushed despite consultation slots lasting up to 45 minutes. Plus, extra imaging may sometimes be needed, which can increase your out-of-pocket costs.

Pros

  • Upfront detailed pricing
  • Accepts existing X-rays
  • Comprehensive surgical care
  • Up to 45-minute consultation slots

Cons

  • Some consultations may feel rushed
  • Extra imaging may increase costs

Such a great surgeon

Dr Barit such a great surgeon. I was treated with great care, kindness, and patience. From my initial consultations to my surgery I am so grateful to him and all his staff who have been nothing but kind and patient.  Highly recommend. 😊 …

Incredibly talented surgeon

I had read far to many horror stories on the internet about wisdom tooth removal over local anesthesia. As fearful as I was Mark removed that tooth in a matter of minutes and stitched me up in the most professional manner that I have and probably will ever experience.

0 swelling 0 pain after 24 hours, I can safely say and vouch to the world that Mark is an incredibly talented surgeon and I’d vouch for him every day of every week.
