The 5 Best Studios for Guitar Lessons in Melbourne That Helped Us Find Our Rhythm

  • Instructor Expertise: I looked at the qualifications and teaching background of the musicians running the sessions. This ensures you learn proper techniques right from the start.

  • Curriculum Flexibility: Top academies should tailor their teaching plans to suit individual musical goals and interests. This keeps your practice sessions highly engaging and relevant.

  • Studio Amenities: Having access to quality instruments and online practice portals adds immense value to your learning experience. It saves you from transport hassles and extra material costs.

  • Scheduling and Policies: I evaluated how easy it is to book, cancel, or reschedule sessions around a busy lifestyle. Clear and fair guidelines protect your investment and time.

I once promised myself I’d try a hobby that didn’t involve another screen. Something creative, slightly impressive, and maybe useful enough to make me seem more interesting at parties.

Art classes crossed my mind, badminton coaching had its appeal, but guitar won because, really, who doesn’t want to play their favorite songs?

That was when I learned two things: (1) fingers can be painfully dramatic, and (2) the right teacher makes all the difference.

Melbourne’s music scene is packed with studios, but choosing one can feel like tuning by pure guesswork.

So, I rounded up the best guitar lessons in Melbourne to help you find your perfect match. Let’s go!

How much does a guitar lesson cost in Melbourne?

Guitar lessons in Melbourne generally cost between $45 and $120 AUD per hour, depending on the instructor’s qualifications and lesson format.

Each lesson is relaxed, encouraging, and really well structured

I’ve had a great experience with these guitar lessons and couldn’t recommend them enough. Each lesson is relaxed, encouraging, and really well structured. Everything is explained clearly, and I always feel comfortable asking questions. I’ve gained so much confidence and motivation since starting. What I’ve appreciated most is how tailored the lessons are — they’re adapted to my skill level, musical interests, and goals but also collaborate with a group to make things even more fun and social !

I would highly recommend these guitar lessons to anyone!

I walk away from each lesson very inspired

Have been taking lessons here with Michael for a couple of months and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn or progress further on guitar. I walk away from each lesson very inspired with new concepts and ideas to work on. Everyone is very friendly and provides a great environment to learn.

2. The Music Gym

Address: Galleria Shop E09, 348 Little Collins Street

Contact: 0401 168 742

Hours: Monday to Thursday: 11AM – 7PM; Friday: 11AM – 4PM; Saturday: 10:30AM – 1PM

The Music Gym makes learning music less intimidating; yup, you don’t even have to lug your own instrument through the CBD!

The first thing I liked here was how easy everything felt. You just show up, grab the gear they already have on-site, and jump straight into playing.

Their classes aren’t the quiet, stiff kind either. They’re built around active band jamming, so you’re learning rhythm and musicianship by actually playing with other people.

I can see why busy professionals would love this setup, too. The 45-minute sessions are short enough to squeeze into a lunch break, but still lively enough to seem like you’ve done something fun and productive.

The catch? Their premium group format may feel expensive compared to casual community lessons.

Pros

  • On-site instruments make lessons hassle-free
  • Active band jamming builds real musicianship
  • Short sessions suit busy professionals
  • CBD setup feels convenient and accessible

Cons

  • Premium group format may feel expensive

I love the Music Gym

I love the Music Gym. So convenient to go to a lesson whilst working in the city without having to lug my guitar around. Pez is a fabulous teacher and I’ve definitely advanced a lot faster than with any other teacher. He teaches what you want to learn which makes it interesting and relevant to each individual. The staff at the music gym are all so friendly and down to earth. Everyone is made to feel welcomed. I cannot recommend this studio enough.

Pez is the best teacher I’ve ever had

Pez is the best teacher I’ve ever had. I’d never played the guitar before and he was patient and positive whilst still making me feel like I was learning and getting better with each lesson. Would recommend to anyone and everyone 🙂

3. Hollier Music Academy

hollier-music-academy

Website:https://www.holliermusic.com.au/

Address: Level 2, 430 Little Collins Street

Contact: 0492 953 650

Hours: Sunday – Friday 11:00 AM–8:30 PM; Saturday, 11:00 AM–6:30 PM

Hollier Music Academy is one of those places that doesn’t just hand you a standard lesson plan and call it a day.

They teach based on the music you actually want to play, so if you’re into rock, indie pop, or popular Western music from the 1950s to today, you’ll probably feel right at home here.

They also have a bunch of free digital resources on their website, including quality tabs and technique guides, which is super helpful when you’re practising on your own.

A friend of mine who studied there said they learned to read tabs pretty quickly because practical music theory was introduced early.

Just keep in mind that Hollier Music Academy isn’t really built for classical training. Their strength is modern, guitar-driven styles.

Pros

  • Lessons match students’ preferred music styles
  • Strong focus on modern guitar-driven music
  • Free tabs and technique guides online
  • Practical theory helps with reading tabs

Cons

  • Not ideal for classical guitar training

Very knowledgeable

Great way to learn the Guitar – Rod is relaxed but very knowledgeable.  He really thinks about each lesson.  I am a raw beginner (at 62 years old!)  and he is very structured with his approach, teaching something new each week, building on previous lessons but not stressing out if I haven’t been able to practice.  It is a very enjoyable experience

Very helpful and responsive with all class communication

I couldn’t recommend Hollier Music Academy highly enough. I started learning guitar with Rod about six months ago, and he has been incredibly patient, clear, and methodical in his teaching. The techniques are explained in a way that really makes sense, and I’ve already noticed a significant improvement in my playing. It’s also a very supportive and encouraging environment, which makes learning enjoyable and motivating!

Veronica has also been wonderful — very helpful and responsive with all class communication.

4. Melbourne Guitar School

Address: Rear 66/68 High St, Northcote

Contact: 0401 489 437

Hours: Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM–9:00 PM

Melbourne Guitar School doesn’t do boring, repetitive finger drills. Their lessons are built around practical techniques and real songs, which makes the experience feel more exciting.

They have clear pathways for different skill levels, so you’re not just winging it. Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or working toward more advanced skills, there’s a smooth route to follow.

Beginners get a strong foundation from day one, too. They cover posture, tuning, ear training, and smart practice routines early, so you don’t accidentally build bad habits.

I also like that their multi-lesson bundles make budgeting easier, especially if you’re planning to stick with the program long-term.

Just note that make-up lessons are strict. Cancelled sessions must be rescheduled within the same week, and fees are non-refundable.

Pros

  • Practical lessons use real songs
  • Clear pathways for every skill level
  • Beginners build strong fundamentals early
  • Multi-lesson bundles make budgeting easier

Cons

  • Make-up lessons have strict rescheduling
  • Lesson fees are non-refundable

Jon is a fantastic guitar teacher

Jon is a fantastic guitar teacher, taking the time to understand the musical interests and goals of the learner. His lesson plan includes the right level of core technique combined with learning songs to maintain enthusiasm, especially for kids and teens.

Highly recommend Jon

Jon is a fantastic guitar teacher. My son is a beginner and has had lessons with him for a year now. He has made amazing progress, loves attending lessons and even happily practices at home. Jon is patient and lets him choose the songs he learns which keeps him engaged. Highly recommend Jon!

5. Beginner Electric Guitar Course

beginner-electric-guitar-course

Website:https://rockguitarlessons.com.au/

Address: Brunswick at 3 Merrifield Street

Contact: [email protected]

Hours: Monday to Thursday, 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM

I like that Beginner Electric Guitar Course doesn’t make you jump through hoops before you even start playing. You don’t need to buy your own guitar right away because they actually provide one for class, and you can take it home for practice at no extra cost.

That’s a pretty sweet deal if you’re still testing the waters!

The six-week setup is clearly made for adults with zero music background, so you won’t feel like everyone else is miles ahead of you.

They also give you weekly recordings and video demos through a shared folder, which makes practicing at home much easier.

Still, this isn’t for anyone who wants private coaching. Everything’s done in a group setting, and the guitars are unamplified, so you won’t really explore amp tones yet.

Pros

  • Free guitar loan for home practice
  • Great for adults with no background
  • Six-week format feels beginner-friendly
  • Weekly recordings make practice easier

Cons

  • Not suitable for private coaching
  • Unamplified guitars limit tone exploration

Great place to start learning electric guitar

Great place to start learning electric guitar! I’ve always been satisfied with each lesson and have come away with new skills that get me excited to pick up my guitar and start practicing. Dean is super friendly, supportive, and has made the whole experience a joy. Highly recommend!

It’s been a genuinely awesome experience so far

I started with absolutely no guitar experience – never even held one before my first lesson with Dean. Now, in my second term, I’ve got my own electric guitar and a growing passion for playing it, which I didn’t expect at all! Dean makes learning feel approachable and engaging, and he explains things in a way that just makes sense. It’s been a genuinely awesome experience so far!
